Helping Our Neighbors in Need and Providing Hope for the Future
Lake Christian Ministries (LCM) is a non-profit outreach ministry supported by individuals, churches, civic organizations, and businesses. Since 1992, LCM has provided food, clothing, household items, crisis financial aid, and job assistance, community referral and mentor support to our neighbors in need in Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties.
LCM’s vision is to create a poverty-free SML community where each individual is valued, is connected and lives in hope. To move closer to this vision, LCM has expanded its New Tomorrows program, which assists neighbors in developing financial, educational and employment strategies with the help of volunteer partners. Included in this program is a 16-week Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World class that helps neighbors better understand the barriers that are keeping them in poverty and develop a plan to move toward a more secure future.

In 2022, LCM provided:
- Food assistance to fulfill over 3,145 requests which provided 160,360 meals for food insecure families.
- Two mobile food pantries provided food monthly to some 60 families in the Penhook area. A partnership with Bedford Ride provided the delivery of monthly food supplies from LCM to 25 neighbors who are shut-in at home due to health, age and/or disability.
- Crisis financial aid was provided to support 1,493 individuals in 494 families. A total of $270,670 was paid directly to service providers for housing; utilities; medical, dental and prescription drug expenses; and other types of crisis assistance – representing a 48% annual increase in the number of families benefiting from financial aid.
- Individual relationship-based support for 213 neighbors through the New Tomorrows program. Trained LCM partners and neighbors work together one-to one to make the best use of available services within LCM and in the community; engage in educational support; and work toward job readiness and placement.
- Since its beginning in 2015, the Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World class series has benefitted over 105 individuals, helping them move to a more secure future.
- Food baskets for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter to more than 2,000 individuals.
- Back-to-school supplies to 235 children in grades K-12.
- Warm clothing and gifts to 460 children in vulnerable families, through “A Child’s Christmas.”
- Dental and denture assistance for over 70 neighbors through restricted grants.
- 28,750 volunteer hours were offered by 230 volunteers to provide LCM’s programs and services.
Our History
LCM first opened its doors in September of 1992 as a satellite facility of Bedford Christian Ministries. Supported by four local churches—Bethlehem United Methodist, Morgan’s Baptist, Resurrection Catholic, and Trinity Ecumenical Parish—LCM operated in several facilities until 1998, when the Cappellari family, owners of CAPPS Home Building Center, moved their operations to a new location and donated their previous facility to LCM. With the enthusiastic support of numerous volunteers, the building was remodeled to accommodate LCM’s many services and re-opened in early 1999.
