Helping Our Neighbors in Need and Providing Hope for the Future
Lake Christian Ministries (LCM) is a non-profit outreach ministry supported by individuals, churches, civic organizations, and businesses. Since 1992, LCM has provided food, clothing, household items, crisis financial aid, and neighbor job assistance, community referral and mentor support to our neighbors in need in Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties.

LCM’s vision is to create a poverty-free SML community where each individual is valued, is connected and lives in hope. During 2018-2019, to move closer to this vision, LCM expanded its New Tomorrows program, which assists neighbors in clarifying financial and family issues and developing financial, educational and employment strategies with the help of volunteer Partners. Included in this program is a 16-week Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World class that helps neighbors better understand the barriers that are keeping them in poverty and develop a plan to move toward a more secure future.

In 2020, LCM provided:
  • Food to 2,101 unduplicated individuals, totaling 182,440 meals (two nutritional meals a day for five days per person per monthly visit) served to 733 households.
  • Two mobile food pantries provide food monthly to some 60 families in the Penhook area and Moneta Senior Center who are unable to travel to LCM.
  • Emergency financial aid to 336 families, amounting to $197,181 paid directly to the providers for housing; fuel; electricity; medical, dental and prescription drug expenses; and other types of crisis assistance – representing a 70% increase in financial aid over 2019.
  • Individual relationship-based support for 18 neighbors through the Partners Program, a new component service of the New Tomorrows program. Trained LCM Partners and neighbors work together one-to one to make the best use of available services within LCM and in the community; engage in lifestyle improvement education; and work toward job readiness and placement.
  • Since its beginning in 2015, the Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World class series has benefitted 60 families, helping them move to a more secure future.
  • Food baskets for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter to more than 2,000 individuals.
  • Back-to-school supplies to 230 children in grades K-12.
  • Warm clothing and gifts to 431 children in vulnerable families, through “A Child’s Christmas.” This represents a 21% increase over the number of children served in 2019.
  • Dental and denture support for 93 Neighbors through restricted grants.

Other 2020 LCM facts:
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, LCM served a growing number of vulnerable families. 15% of these families were new to LCM service.
  • 230 volunteers worked more than 28,650 hours to provide LCM’s programs and services.
  • Nearly 58% of LCM neighbors are under 18 or over 55 years of age.

Our History

LCM first opened its doors in September of 1992 as a satellite facility of Bedford Christian Ministries. Supported by four local churches—Bethlehem United Methodist, Morgan’s Baptist, Resurrection Catholic, and Trinity Ecumenical Parish—LCM operated in several facilities until 1998, when the Cappellari family, owners of CAPPS Home Building Center, moved their operations to a new location and donated their previous facility to LCM. With the enthusiastic support of numerous volunteers, the building was remodeled to accommodate LCM’s many services and re-opened in early 1999.
