Lake Christian Ministries will once again participate in SML Gives, a 24-hour online giving event supporting nonprofits that serve the Smith Mountain Lake region, on March 18. This year, anonymous supporters have pledged a $30,000 matching challenge, doubling the impact of every dollar raised up to that amount.

“SML Gives comes at a critical time for many families,” said LCM Executive Director Jane Winters. “The brutal winter weather we’ve experienced has driven up heating costs and strained already tight household budgets. We’re seeing more neighbors who need help with utilities and food, and this matching gift gives our community a powerful way to respond.”

Now in its fifth year, SML Gives encourages residents and visitors to support local nonprofits through one coordinated day of generosity. Early online giving begins March 16 at smlgives.org, with donations open through March 18.

LCM will also host two in-person opportunities for donors on SML Gives Day:

  • Donor Hospitality Event: Stop by SML Coffee House from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 18 to drop off cash or checks, meet staff and volunteers, and receive assistance with online donations.

  • SML Gives Nonprofit Fair: Visit LCM representatives from 2-5 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church to learn more about local services and ways to give.

“Every year, this community shows incredible generosity,” Winters added. “With the increased need we’re seeing this year, every gift — especially with the match — makes a meaningful difference for families working to stay warm, fed and stable.”

LCM provides food, financial assistance, clothing, and support services to families across Bedford, Franklin, and Pittsylvania counties. Contributions through SML Gives help ensure these essential resources remain available for neighbors facing hardship.

SML Gives Day $30,000 Matching Challenge Boosts Support for Neighbors in Need

We would like to extend our appreciation to our wonderful SML community for helping Lake Christian Ministries bring joy to 808 children through the 2025 A Child’s Christmas Program. High living expenses continued to impact low-income families this past year, which created a significant increase in requests for Christmas gifts from parents who are struggling to make ends meet.

We were overwhelmed with the community’s support to fulfill Christmas wishes for 808 children in need. These children live in homes where income is not enough to pay household bills, much less buy warm clothes or Christmas gifts. Our warm and generous SML community rallied together to provide personalized gifts for each child through Angel Cards.  Our community donated warm coats, clothing, books, and toys for participating children. Dedicated volunteers sorted and loaded presents in parents’ cars on December 13.

The generosity of our wonderful community is such a blessing. On behalf of the 808 children in the SML community who received toys and warm coats under their trees this year, I want to thank our community supporters for assisting us with the 2025 A Child’s Christmas Program.  We look forward to working with you again on the 2026 A Child’s Christmas Program.

We hope that 2026 brings you good health and much happiness.

In appreciation,

Jane Winters
